Falangio, the “spider plant” that purifies the air in the house

The Falangio is a well-known indoor plant and also appreciated as an office plant both for its high decorative power and for its ability to purify the environment. This plant, in fact, like ivy, fern, aloe and dragon tree, belongs to the category of decontaminating plants . It manages to eliminate some harmful substances that are present in all closed environments, especially carbon monoxide and xylene. In this article, we’ll explain many useful tips for growing it to beautify your home and also purify the air.

What plant is the phalanx?

Also known as Spider Plant, Chlorophytum, Nastrino or Nastrina, it is an indoor plant capable of purifying domestic air as well as decorating rooms thanks to the beauty of its leaves.

Its scientific name is Chlorophytum, and it is an evergreen plant belonging to the family Agavaceae.

Its whitish roots are fibrous and tuberous. The aerial part is very picturesque, formed by numerous lanceolate green leaves, often marbled with white. Long and narrow, they can reach 60 cm and are arranged in a central rosette. They are grouped in thick, dense tufts. In spring, new stems appear, very long and with a drooping bearing.

Variety

Three types of hybrids are grown, all of which have an ornamental function:

  • C. comosum – The most common variety with white stems, green leaves with wavy edges, and small odorless white flowers
  • C. undulatum : Its leaves are rough and narrow, with hardened margins. The spike-shaped flowers are white with red streaks.
  • C. laxum : small variety, with deep green leaves and white margins. The flowers are collected in panicles.

Phalanx: Plant Care

Quite hardy, it is a fairly easy plant to care for. It can be grown both in pots and in the ground. Let’s see what the ideal conditions are for growing it.

If it is grown in a pot, we advise you to keep it indoors during the warmer months, while during the autumn months you can take it outside, always keeping an eye on the temperatures; if, on the other hand, you want to place it on the ground, you will need to make sure that the temperature does not fall below 7 ° C and that the phalanx is well protected from the sun.
